Frome Equine Vets is an equine-focused practice that offers emergency veterinary services and is frequently used for pre-purchase examinations (including 5-stage vettings). Reviews repeatedly describe detailed, step-by-step communication during vettings—one client reports the vet phoned at each stage to explain findings and check whether they wanted to proceed. Another specific example mentioned is rapid turnaround of documentation, with certificate/notes/scans emailed the same day. There is also a clear split in experiences around a disputed sale: one reviewer alleges the practice “blew” a sale before seeing the horse, while the buyer involved says they personally chose not to proceed due to concerns about incomplete history and reluctance to release records/passport.

Takes a lot for me to write a review, but had an amazing experience this week. Not local to the area or county, I had reached out for a 5 stage vetting plus x-rays of hocks and back to be done on a horse we were buying. The frontline Vet Tech was amazing both in phone manner, and in taking the time (i.e. no rush and patient) to get all of our details including explaining clearly to us the process and what to expect (as well as the exact costs of each bit). They were great at fitting us in too the same week and they even managed directly with the seller, the logistics. On the day itself, the Vet phoned us to explain his findings at each stage to see if we wanted to proceed further or not. We were given a very clear clinical diagnosis, what it meant in layman's terms, and importantly, without trying to prejudice us with the horse purchase in either direction. We asked a 'million' questions and the vet was able to, in a very sensitive manner, answer any concerns we had on his prognosis. With all of this information we were able to make a decision on the horse sale (which was an unfortunate no). The same day we got emailed the certificate, the notes and scans. Genuinely, a fantastic service had from them. Thank you and would use you again.

This vet blows sales on horses they are supposed to be vetting before even seeing the horse! If they don’t want the work they should turn the client away! Apparently the owner and the owners vet is lying about the vet history! Yes four year old mares can genuinely have no vet history. Hilary Franklin you are being reported Frome Vets ruining livelihoods and reputations, not to mention time wasting, everywhere they go, due to their own incompetence. You’ve cost your customer the chance of owning one of the easiest and straightest four year olds on the market In response to the comment below, I have no idea why you were refused to see the passport, you were dealing with a selling agent and were given my details to contact me directly to discuss the mare and any history (ie had a foal, why she has no vet history (her microchipping went on her dams record, her own foal had his own history due to a compaction and need attention the day he was born, so his microchipping went on his own record - legitimate for most studs. It was an accidental mating, colt got in with the mares, all those mares not already in foal were teased and those that showed in season were jabbed to lose their pregnancy. Itzy didn’t tease in season so wasn’t jabbed so again no vet record for a jab or scanning.) I don’t know how you can say vet history was withheld, my vet said there was no history and had been my vet since 2015, what else did you expect her to say!!!! It’s completely logical that the marking up of the foal would go on to its dam record, rather than create 6-10 records every year for foals that most often aren’t staying. Perhaps Frome Equine don’t have any breeders on their books to realise this is standard practice! Next time, pick up the phone and speak to the owner rather than accuse things are shady and being withheld. It really is your loss though as Itzy will be someone’s horse of a lifetime and Frome equine Vets have now been blacklisted from vetting most local selling yards after this debacle. How can there be inconsistencies in the history when there is NO history. That’s makes zero sense. And by saying there is inconsistency in history is actually accusing someone of lying and falsifying records. You were given exactly what was requested, yet you say it was withheld! Time wasting and costing money whilst a horse is off the market for you to vet, a wasted week on sales livery because the two of you dreamed up so problems that just weren’t there! If you had spoken to me I could have given you any number of previous customers who could reassure you how honest I am, I have heaps and heaps of happy REPEAT customers.

As the client involved in the previous accusation I feel compelled to respond as this is misrepresentative. I made the decision myself not to proceed with this vetting having been given inconsistent information about this mare & a reluctance to release any vet records or show her full passport prior to the vetting. A 4 year old mare may well have had no reason to be attended by a vet but I would expect that a mare that has been microchipped & had a foal (this was undisclosed) would have been seen by a vet at some stage. When vet records were requested we received a letter from a vet simply stating that she held no medical records for this mare, which offers little reassurance. No accusations of lying have been made by myself or Hilary. I stated that there were inconsistencies in the history, I felt that information was being withheld & based on this I didn’t wish to proceed with the vetting. Hilary acted professionally & offered pragmatic advice throughout & at no point did she advise me not to proceed. I wouldn’t hesitate to instruct her again.
